Today’s pet dogs have a lot of wild instincts that go far back in their bloodlines. After all, their ancestors were required to be aggressive to survive, to look for food and shelter, and to mate. A lot of selective breeding has taken place over the centuries which has stopped a lot of the aggression in dogs; however, the ability to attack and inflict harm is just as prevalent now as it was with your dog’s ancestors. NOTE: My brother and his wife had suffered a lot of heart ache over their lovely new puppy. The puppy (Sidney) is doing well, and should be out of the vet’s soon, but please read the following if you are shopping for a new puppy.
INSIST that your new puppy has a Parvo test before you take him home. Preferably tested on the very same day you pick him up. The virus incubates in their system for approx. two weeks before they show any symptoms. A “week old” vet check from the breeder may possibly be useless, as they may have been exposed to the virus after the fact. They require 3 shots to be immune, the 1st shot at 6 weeks will not protect them. Whether it’s at the breeder’s expense, or your own – do not take ownership of that puppy until you have a recent Parvovirus test done. Always take messy poop seriously in puppies – Get them to a Vet right away. Usually means the puppy is ill. Not necessarily Parvo, but could very well be life threatening. With Parvo, early detection & medical care is essential to their chances of survival.. every hour counts !! Parvo is a real threat ~ it’s everywhere, it’s vicious & it’s lethal.

There are so many types of dogs I wish I could own, but I have a hard time deciding since each breed has its own unique qualities. One is a Rhodesian ridgeback. They are good companions for children, known to be good watchdogs, and were, once upon a time, lion hunters in Africa. Rhodesian Ridgebacks need lots of exercise and plenty of room to run. Another dog I once thought would be cool to have is a mastiff. Mastiffs are large dogs that can tip the scale at as much as 150 pounds. Read the rest of this entry
