You have probably heard people say, “Don’t feed your dog human food”. There is truth to that statement!

Did you know that onions can be very poisonous to dogs (and cats). Their bodies cannot digest the thiosulphates in onions and this chemical can rob their blood of the ability to carry oxygen.

Other dangerous foods include chocolate, mushroom, macadamia nuts, garlic, avocados, grapes, raisins, and all spicy or greasy foods. In each case these foods contains chemicals which rarely cause problems for humans, but for dogs, these same chemicals can be deadly.

Dog owner’s often discuss the benefits of feeding their pet raw dog food as opposed to cooked or processed food. In the wild, raw food is what dogs had access to and this is what nature intended for them. Some argue that raw food can make dogs ill even poisoning them in extreme cases and although this can be true, the benefits of raw dog food against manufactured pet food that is later recalled is paramount. Because of China’s zoophobia, the Western World would never have heard about Shar Peis if not for the diligent efforts of Hong Kong businessman Matgo Law. Shar Peis became victims of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Along with many other Chinese traditions and art forms, Shar Peis were outlawed and mostly destroyed. Matgo Law managed to rescue some and get them spirited away to Western countries. He started exporting Shar Peis in 1973. MOVIES and television shows seem to idealize the concept of ‘a boy and his dog’ or ‘a little girl and her pony’, yet numerous parents note a noticeable contrast from what is depicted and the reality of the situation. Just as with a new toy, a new pet can raise promises of everything from proper pet care to good behavior. Sadly, the novelty of a new pet wears off just as fast, and many a parent is left to deal with a elapsed puppy, or a kitten that isn’t quite as cute when it scratches. If you have the time and money, you can use the services of a professional dog trainer and go to puppy training classes. Your other option is to buy one of the programs out there that teach you how to train a puppy. As long as you are willing to put the time in, you really can’t go wrong.
